Les nouvelles des Safaris Australiens

Goldfields, ghost towns, salt lakes and bull dust in store for this year’s Safari competitors.................

Competitors in this year’s Australasian Safari will be cheered off in Perth before they travel approximately 4000km, first heading north to Geraldton then east through Western Australia’s golden outback to finish seven days later in the infamous gold mining town of Kalgoorlie.

The thriving port city of Geraldton, the first overnight stop, will be the last time competitors see the ocean for a week when the terrain changes from coast, sand dunes, scrub and wildflowers to vast open plains, red dirt, huge gold mines, rocky outcrops and salt lakes.

The second overnight stop is Mt Magnet, in the heart of 19th century gold boom country. The town itself has the wide roads and quaint shop fronts of the gold rush days and the course is likely to pass through striking granite rock formations, old mining land and vast private pastoral land.

The Finke Desert Race

Image
Since the last e-newsletter we've visited the Finke at Alice Springs and the Yilgarn Rallye at Southern Cross. Visiting other events is a great way to catch up with everyone in one place.

Congrats to Ben Grabham #X98 KTM has won his fourth Tattersall’s Finke Desert title with a badly broken hand, in a time of 1:58mins. Also to Chad McKay on a Can-Am DS450 XMX9 QUAD in a time of 02:37mins.

In the auto categories, the South Australian crew of Greg Gartner and Jamie Jennings have made Tattersall’s Finke Desert Race history by taking victory in an Extreme 2WD truck, displacing the normal supremacy of the Pro Buggies in Australia’s largest and most prestigious off-road event.

Yilgarn Rallye

At Yilgarn, a storm came through on Friday night but it didn't affect competitors or the roads.
Congratulations to Damien Grabham for his flawless riding to take out first place. David Schwarz had some technical difficulties on Leg 1, but set a blistering pace on Leg 2 to take second place. Matt Fish was well placed until an incident with a tree on Leg 2

Adventure Tour – the Ultimate ‘Mancation’

We sent a media release about the Adventure Tour called ‘the Ultimate Mancation’ and we had a strong response to it. Apparently people like the idea of the ‘Mancation’. We didn’t think of it first, but it is definitely the best way to describe the Adventure Tour. Not for those who want to spend time catching some rays on the beach or reading a good book. Days of good solid riding with full safety back up, plus opportunities for spectating on the Safari and visiting some of the local tourist sites. If you are thinking about entering the Safari then this is also a good way to practice navigation as there will be opportunities for using a scroll reader, but it is not necessary to have one to take part in the Adventure Tour.

Keep An Eye Out

This year, things to look for on the Safari Route.
5km out of Sandstone is the outback's version of the London Bridge, built from the orange / red rocks that Sandstone is known for. Looking through the bridge you can see across the vast, bushy horizon. As you approach the London Bridge look out for the site of an old brewery built into a cave.
